Take the First Step

This is the seventh in a series of posts about what I have learned from my authors.

TL;DR: The lesson I learned from ghostwriting Chris’ Hunter’s book Blackout Punch: Just begin.

How often have you been afraid to try something because you didn’t know what would happen or how it would work out? How many first dates never happened because someone was afraid of rejection? How many athletes didn’t learn to love a sport because they were afraid to be beginners again? How many businesses were never started, how many books never written because of “what if”?

Chris Hunter, who founded the company that made the explosively popular alcoholic drink Four Loko, and went on to create the national health drink Koia, is blessed by the belief that his grandmother always looks out for him, even after her death. That was a superpower that gave Chris the confidence to try things with the confidence that he could figure out how to keep moving forward.

Chris will admit that he thrives in chaos, that he likes making decisions under pressure. He made a lot of mistakes when he and two partners started Phusion Projects, the company that produces and sells Four Loko. But he just kept putting in the reps, showing up relentlessly, dealing with what was in front of him and looking ahead to the next thing. His mindset brought him a rich and varied life.

It is flat-out impossible to know what is going to happen, so dive in and find out. Trust yourself that you’ve got this. You probably do, and if you don’t you’ll learn something. In other words, you can’t lose.
